Shopify is what I like to call a “turnkey” eCommerce platform. This means that it is an end-to-end tool that allows you to start, grow, and manage your online business. 

Shopify gives you everything to set up and begin selling without having to pull the pieces together yourself. No developer or designer is needed. 

You can:

  • Create and customize an online store without the expense of a developer. 

  • Sell your products with Shopify on the web, mobile devices, brick & mortar locations, social media, and online marketplaces.

  • Manage all of your products, inventory, payments, and shipping from a single environment. 

  • Enjoy packaged in cloud-based hosting - meaning you never have to worry about maintaining and upgrading your software or web servers. 

  • Add advanced functionality with integrated apps. 

Our Overall ExpertSumo Rating

Shopify may advertise itself as a “package deal”, but that doesn’t mean it's a one size fits all solution for every business. 

Because of this, it just wouldn’t be accurate to give Shopify a single, aggregate rating. Instead, I’ve divided our rating into consumer segments, so you can make the right choice for your type of business

Shopify for Bloggers:

DETAILS:

  • Does your website make money through advertisements?

  • Do you spend most of your time creating and releasing content?

If you answered yes, then Shopify is NOT for you. 

Shopify was built for eCommerce and sales, not articles and ads.

Now if your business had a blog AND a store, then you could (and should) use Shopify for your store section (and use something else for your blog).

Likewise, if you use Shopify for your store, you may decide you want to start a blog for marketing reasons. But, in order to do that you'll need to get something else to manage your blog (like Wordpress for example... but you'll need hosting).

VERDICT: 

If you're looking for an online store, Shopify is a great choice. Buy it (and make sure to buy it through our special link to get your scholarship) - click any yellow button, or right here to let us know where to send your link.

But if your focus is blogging, use Wordpress instead. I am a fan of Wordpress, and have used it for dozens of different sites, both for ourselves and our clients. There are tens of thousands of professional themes and plugins, and Wordpress itself is free.

DETAILS: 

I've seen people go from 'idea' to 'million dollar business', all on the Shopify platform. If your startup sells things online (particularly products to consumers), Shopify is a great choice. Here's why:

First, the pricing is competitive compared to other platforms, with the power to scale with you as your business grows. 

Second, it’s user friendly. Even your non-technical teammates will find it simple to manage products, inventory, payments, and shipping all in a single area. 

Third, no developer? No problem. Shopify offers over 100 free and premium professionally designed plug and play ecommerce themes, along with 24/7 support. That mean you don't need a developer (or if you do have a developer, you don't have to pull them off other important issues) in order to customize and integrate your site.

VERDICT: 

More brands are choosing Shopify to launch their business. It’s a robust, mobile-friendly, online store that can be set up quickly and easily, and it’s fully hosted with room for growth. 

The cost of one-time themes and other applications are offset in the money you save not needing a developer or designer, additional hosting, 24-hour built-in support, and other packaged features.

The only reason I give 4 stars here instead of 5 is as a reminder that not all startups or small businesses are the same - if you're a SAAS product, or a B2B company, Shopify doesn't fit quite as well.

Shopify for Service Based Businesses:

OVERALL: ★★☆☆☆ - 2/5 stars.

PRICING: ★★★☆☆ - 3/5 stars.

EASE OF USE: ★★☆☆☆ - 2/5 stars.

DETAILS: 

  • Is most of your money made with your expertise or the time that you spend? 

  • Do you offer intangible products that can’t be stocked on shelves?

Then Shopify CAN work... but there might be other options that make more sense for you.

You can use a combination of Shopify, plugins and tools to manage your service based business, but Shopify isn't optimized for that type of business. At its core, it is designed to sell products.

Also, service-based business owners may encounter additional customization costs and complications coming up with unique workarounds for things like custom fields, registering, and scheduling.

VERDICT:

Shopify doesn’t offer tools like scheduling, registration, subscription, and custom fields that are beneficial to professional services.  You would need to add those through a combination of plugins and custom integrations.

I compare this to trying to cut a steak with a butter knife. It's possible, but it becomes pretty clear that the tool you're using wasn't built for your specific job.

There are several other options for service providers. I know of one business that is killing it using ClickFunnels (which I have a review of right here) ...but as a caveat, I think the platform is only successful for services businesses that are doing a lot of advertising.

Shopify for Multilingual Stores

OVERALL: ★★★★★ - 5/5 stars.

  • Do you offer products in more than one country?

  • Does your customer base speak more than one language?

Shopify has made several API changes in support of multi-language stores. Now you can translate content using the Shopify admin API and manage locales with the ShopLocale object.

With the development of multi-language themes, Shopify has also made several changes to the Liquid templating language. 

Store owners are able to translate content to buyers on the storefront, email notifications, url paths, routes, and even SEO, so you get optimal visibility in every language!

VERDICT:

Shopify is a great option for companies who do business globally. It offers a variety of features from backend to storefront that support multilingual capabilities of both employees and customers. 

Every year, Shopify comes out with more new languages and support in new areas. The availability of multi-language admin and theme support, makes Shopify a more viable for those who do business internationally.

Shopify for Enterprise eCommerce:

Do you anticipate a high volume of product sales? If yes, then Shopify is a great platform for you. 

Shopify was original marketed and tailored to small and medium sized businesses. But as Shopify customers grew, the need to support enterprise level eCommerce stores grew as well. So Shopify created a new level of eCommerce technology called Shopify Plus.

Shopify Plus (Shopify’s next-level technology) was designed specifically for high-volume brands, and I'm talking state-of-the-art. 

This is THE fully hosted SaaS eCommerce platform. Unlike other traditional self-hosted platforms like SAP Hybris and Magento Enterprise, Shopify Plus is infinitely more reliable, ensures max robustness and efficiency through constant monitoring and upgrades. 

In terms of ease of use, you get enterprise-level customization, control, and automation, paired with wicked fast speeds and omni-channel services... all without needing to manage servers.

VERDICT: 

Shopify is a great option for big business. Shopify Plus offers enterprise-grade selling capabilities without the time frames, headaches, or high price tags of traditional enterprise applications. 

With wholesale selling options, unlimited bandwidth, 10-store management, and processing of up to 8,000 orders per minute, you really can’t be the power and reliability of the scalable Shopify Plus SaaS platform.

You may think you know Shopify’s pricing from the pricing page on their website, but did you know Shopify offers other plans that aren’t listed publicly?

Shopify doesn’t display all of their pricing on their homepage (which makes it difficult for some people to find) and even their general pricing page doesn’t include some of the lower and more advanced options that Shopify offers. 

Here are ALL of the Shopify plans, even those not listed on the pricing page:

Shopify Lite Plan

Price: $9 / month

At only $9 a month, users can enjoy some of the benefits of Shopify without going all in on a new website build. 

This is a good fit for people who...

  • Already have a blog or information site

  • Want a tool to sell products on their Facebook page and other social media sites 

Using a Buy button, you can sell and accept credit card payment on any existing site (like a blog or podcast site) or Facebook page. It’s not exactly a real online store with a shopping cart, but is does the trick for smaller companies.

Basic Shopify Plan

Price: $29 / month + 2.9% and $0.30 per transaction

“All of the basics for a new business” will cost you $29 a month + 2.9% and 30¢ per transaction. The Basic Shopify Plan is a good fit for those who…

  • Are a startup or new business 

  • Need a website 

  • Don’t need more than two site admins

When you need a functional yet beautiful online store, but don’t want or need the features in the pricier Shopify plan, this is the sweet spot for you. Members at this level enjoy a range of Shopify features from unlimited products, manual order creation, discount codes, and abandoned cart recovery. You can even print shipping labels with 64% shipping discount!

Shopify Plan

Price: $79 / month + 2.6% and $0.30 per transaction

The most popular of Shopify solutions goes for $79 per month + 2.6% and 30¢ per transaction. Woah, what a jump! But, it isn’t known as “everything you need for a growing business” for no reason. Here’s who it's for:

  • Businesses who need unlimited storage 

  • Bring in more than $5,000 a month

In addition to the Basic, enjoy full access to gift cards, professional reports, and USPS priority shipping with 72% shipping discount. 

Advanced Shopify

Price: $299 / month + 2.4% and $0.30 per transaction

Now this is a plan for people that are serious about growing their business, fast. The price may be an intimidating $299 + 2.4% and 30¢ per transaction, but it comes packed with everything you need to scale your eCommerce store. 

Advanced Shopify is a great fit for...

  • Those who need shipping handled by a third party company 

  • High-revenue companies that need advanced reports

  • Companies that make more than $10,000 a month

Advanced Shopify has everything the previous plans offer plus the advanced report building and third-party calculated shipping rates. It also includes 15 staff accounts and 74% off shipping rates. 

Shopify Plus

Price: around $2,000 a month (you must contact Shopify to receive a custom quote)

Enterprise-level eCommerce systems never looked so good. The highest level of Shopify is so advanced, they don’t even let us get a peak of it on our website. From our research, it’s going to cost around $2,000 a month depending on your size and needs. 

You’ll want to contact Shopify to learn more about this plan if you…

  • Need resources to focus on other aspects of your business like design and marketing (as opposed to order management). 

  • Enterprises that earn more than $1,000,000 in annual sales. 

This level doesn’t incur any transaction fees, and at 200 TB of storage, you’ll have more than enough for a robust store.

Features, Pros and Cons of Shopify

As Shopify states, “You've got the will. We've got the way”. The one-stop platform powers over 500,000 business in 175 countries. In the past year alone, they have more than doubled the amount of products sold through their platform from $7.7 billion to $15.4 billion - that’s a lot of Thread Wallets!

What features attract so many new and existing businesses to make this possible? 

You’ve seen the marketing and you’ve heard that Shopify is “One platform with all the eCommerce and point of sale features you need to start, run, and grow your business.” 

But what does this really mean? What features does this include?

Let’s look at the pros and cons of Shopify’s best and most inclusive features, as well as any possible deal breakers for your business

This feature list will give you an idea of the benefits, pitfalls, and advancements of the robust eCommerce platform that hasn’t been touched on by marketing teams. 

Unlimited Products

When Shopify says unlimited, they mean unlimited. This feature allows you to test, list, sell, and earn revenue from a seemingly endless amount of products. (I’ve tested this theory and still haven’t hit a limit.)

It’s also the very first feature listed on the Shopify plan features page, and is one of the biggest selling points for its lower memberships tiers over other platforms. 

Pros:

Unlimited products are offered with any of the Shopify plans. Yes - even the Basic one too! 

Cons:

None.

Unlimited Bandwidth and Online Storage

Shopify doesn’t only provide built-in hosting (wait, there’s more?). They hook companies of any size and plan up with unlimited bandwidth and online storage. 

This means that you won’t be charged based on your web traffic, online visitors, or how many photos and files you upload. 

Pros:

Every Shopify plan comes with unlimited bandwidth, so your store will remain smooth and fast regardless of dips and climbs in your traffic volume. 

Cons:

Unlimited shouldn’t be a problem for 99% of businesses. However, if you plan on more than 200,000 site visitors to your within 16 minutes of a product dropping you might run into some technical difficulties (ahem, Kylie Cosmetics). 

Shopify Point of Sale (POS)

The Shopify point of sale (POS) application lets you seamlessly offer products in a physical store and pop-up settings. Download to your mobile device to accept payments, process orders, and send receipts via email.

Pros:

Shopify POS offers everything you would expect out of a payment processor, including gift cards, refunds, and split payments. 

Purchase POS products at Shopify’s hardware store or receive a barcode scanner, cash drawer, and receipt for free when you sign up for the Shopify or Shopify Advanced membership.

Cons:

The Shopify card reader and the Bluetooth Tag, Chip, and Swipe card reader isn’t available in all countries. Check the hardware page for more details. 

Those that use a third party payment provider could also incur additional fees between 0.5% and 2%.

Online Sales Channels

Did you know that you can sell online with Shopify on a variety of sales channels? With the premier of the Buy button, you can easily connect to Shopify on other platforms, while keeping track of inventory, orders, and customers.

Pros:

The Shopify Buy button is compatible with…

  • Facebook

  • Amazon

  • Other websites

  • Pinterest

  • Messenger

  • Instagram

Cons:

Not all stores are eligible to add a sales channel. Before setting one up, you’ll also want to review their terms of use. Some channels have additional requirements as far as listing and shipping information. 

Fraud Analysis

Shopify is considered to be one of the safest eCommerce platforms available. When you use Shopify Payment, you automatically get built-in fraud analysis feature that alerts you to suspicious activities. 

Pros:

The fraud analysis tool flags orders that are potentially fraudulent to bring them to your attention. This helps you avoid chargebacks and losses. 

Cons:

Other than alerting you to suspicious behavior, the feature doesn’t prevent fraud. Once notified it is up to your staff to investigate and determine the next best course of action. 

Manual Order Creation

New orders and payment details are a breeze in the Shopify admin. Manual order creation can be taken from your customers over the phone and then followed up with an invoice/receipt. These are known as draft orders, and will be converted to an order when you accept payment for it. 

Pros:

Draft orders are beneficial for orders taken from your customer over the phone and in person. You can even send invoices to your customers with a secure checkout link. 

Custom items can also represent additional products or costs that aren’t found in your primary inventory. Or simply to take pre-orders or sell products at a discounted rate. 

Cons:

This tool is beneficial for a multitude of reasons and uses. However, it is worth noting that you can’t mark a draft order as pending, edit it after it has been paid, or pay for it using the customer’s billing information.

Discount Codes

Discounts are a powerful tool and marketing strategy for your Shopify store. With the Shopify discount feature, you can create codes, apply automatic discounts, and place sales pricing on individual products. 

Pros:

From welcoming new customers to offering exclusive discounts, the discount code features lets you create dollar value savings, percentage discounts, or free shipping costs. Customers are able to enter these codes in person on the Shopify POS or online at checkout. 

Cons:

I love the discount feature. When it comes to passing on discounts to customers and partners, Shopify’s discount codes can manage anything a retail site would need.

Abandoned Cart Recovery

If you know anything about online marketing, then you know that you need abandoned cart recovery (ACR). 

Shopify ACR sends customized emails automatically to customers who leave your site with items left in their cart and even discount codes. 

Pros: 

If your store has a high traffic volume, then ACR can reduce the number of lost orders you incur. Plus, its automatic, so you can set it, forget, and enjoy more conversions!

Cons:

Shopify only offers 4 options for how long you should wait before automatically issuing an abandoned cart email: 1 hour, 6 hours, 10 hours (default), and 24 hours. 

While this is limited in terms of further customization, Shopify assures as that 1 hour and 10 hours later gain the maximum results.

Staff Accounts

When your team needs access to basic admin tasks, while limiting access to sensitive information, Shopify is there with Staff accounts. Additionally, staff account activity is available for you to review on your store’s timeline. 

Pros:

Shopify staff accounts are easy to set up, customize and use. Tailor each account with staff permissions to allow certain people access to certain information. 

Cons:

The amount of additional staff accounts you receive depends directly on your Shopify plan. If you need additional staffing accounts, you will have to upgrade your plan. 

  • Shopify Lite - 1 staff account

  • Basic Shopify - 2 staff accounts

  • Shopify - 3 staff accounts

  • Advanced Shopify - 15 staff accounts

Overview Dashboard

The overview dashboard gives users a quick glance on their store’s performance, including orders, key sales, and visitor data for any range or date. 

Pros:

Plans on all levels have access to key analytics via the Overview dashboard. All data is up to date, within a minute, making it easy to keep track of your website’s stats.  I love that the dashboard is organized, user friendly, and reveals plenty of useful information on your Shopify site performance. 

Cons:

No cons! The Overview dashboard has everything you need you in a performance tracking system. I love that the dashboard is organized, user friendly, and reveals plenty of useful information on your Shopify site performance

Finance Report

When you need more than an overview, Shopify’s Finance Reports provide you with key information on your business financials. 

Pros:

The finance report is easy to use, giving you a clear up-to-date overview of your sales, payment, and pending sales data. Full finance reports are also available when you need more detail. 

Cons:

Discrepancies sometimes arise between the Sales and Finance reports. This is due to different reporting methods between “orders placed” and “payment made”, which sometimes take place on different dates. To make matters equally as confusing, gift cards show up in the Payments finance report and in pending sale finance report. This could however, be beneficial when you decide how to report Gift cards in your own bookkeeping.

Customer Support

Shopify offers 24/7 customer service for every membership level from Lite to Plus. Shopify’s Support team is conveniently available via chat and email, while those with the Basic plan and up, gain additional access to Shopify 24/7 chat support. 

Pros:

Shopify takes their eCommerce support seriously, which is one of the reasons they’ve made their mark as a top eCommerce brand. You can contact their team any time when you need help setting something up or have questions about your store. 

Cons:

Shopify’s live chat and phone support option is only available in English. However, 24/7 email support is available in other languages.

Additional Features

Shopify’s features are so robust, I could write a book! While I couldn’t fit them all here, I didn’t want you to miss out on learning everything you need to know about Shopify. 

Some of the additional features highlighted on the higher-tiered plans include:

Shopify could be a great fit, depending on the things you sell. Shopify is best-in-class at selling physical products that you ship to your customers...other product types can work, others don't. More on that in the next question.

NO, WE DON'T SELL PRODUCTS ONLINE, WE SELL THEM IN PERSON:

Avoid Shopify, you need a simple website that will point people to your in-person location. I suggest a Wordpress website using budget hosting from Bluehost.

NO, WE DON'T SELL PRODUCTS ONLINE, WE SHOW ADVERTISEMENTS ON OUR SITE:

Shopify isn't built for that kind of website. If you're trying to build a website that shows ads, go with Wordpress, and use Bluehost or WPEngine depending on how big you're planning on your site being.

If you do sell products, what types of products do you sell?

WE SELL PHYSICAL GOODS THAT WE SHIP TO CONSUMERS:

Shopify is built for you, physical good is where it shines. Sign yourself up (and remember to get your bonus first).

You could use Shopify, but it isn't built for it... and you'd need more plugins, services and customizations to make it work.

I suggest using something like ClickFunnels or Thinkific instead.

WE SELL SERVICES TO CONSUMERS OR BUSINESSES

Shopify was built to sell physical products, to consumers or businesses. It wasn't built to sell services, and it wasn't built for purchases that require the help of a salesperson. You could make it work with some customizations and integrations, but it wasn't how Shopify was meant to be used.

Is Shopify a Scam?

Shopify isn’t a scam - it’s a real company with over 820,000 merchants as of June 2019. It has powered an astounding $100+ billion total sales on the platform to date ($41.1 billion since 2018). 

So why would anyone think it’s a scam? After doing a little digging, I found out why someone would call it a scam, even though it’s a totally legitimate eCommerce platform. 

They purchased an item from a fake store (as a consumer). 

Shopify is committed to its fraud protection and security. Unfortunately, some scammers always find a way to weasel through the cracks. It’s easy to understand why some shoppers would be frustrated if they made a purchase from a fake store. 

But, Shopify isn’t a scam and this isn’t the industry norm. Shopify doesn’t tolerate illegal activity that would jeopardize its members or customers. Security in setting up stores has become more strict for this reason. 

They don’t understand the fees. 

Even though Shopify fully discloses the fees of setting up and selling on their platform, some users don’t fully understand all of the logistics. It doesn’t help that some other online reviewers gloss over important details 

The most popular Shopify plans are the $29/month and $79/month plan. But you will also pay a transaction fee on your items sold. This adds a 30 cent flat rate transaction fee plus a credit card processing on card payments. Most credit card processing fees cost the same or similar rates as Shopify. Shopify also offers free and premium themes and apps, just like Wordpress and other eCommerce platforms. 

This doesn’t mean Shopify is a scam. It just shows the importance of in-depth reviews like ours in giving someone a full understanding of what they are getting into.
